Atletico Madrid had only won one of the last 14 derbies but they were too much for Carlo Ancelotti’s confused Real Madrid. 

Barcelona came back from two goals down to beat Rafa Benitez’ Celta Vigo and move top. 

And elsewhere Girona continue to fly high with another thumping win. Here are ten things we learned from La Liga.

Morata to top score at last
He’s always had all the requisite parts but it’s never quite come together for Alvaro Morata. He’s had a good career so far, not a great one. And he has never top scored in the three leagues he has played in. 

Now with five goals in six games and eight in total because of his Spain hat-trick during the international break he has set the standard for this season and Napoli Tröja if he keeps it up Robert Lewandowski will be the only player stopping him from outscoring everyone. 

‘I want to be important for the team’ he said on the final whistle. Right now he very much is.

The Atletico coach identified one of Madrid’s weaknesses defensively – with no wingers they rely on the full-backs to offer attacking width, and they can leave space in behind. 

Atletico attacked that space and all their goals came from crosses and headers. ‘Their full-backs play high and there were options for our midfielders to get in behind and then try to cross to the back post,’ said the winning coach. 

Ancelotti bemoaned: ‘Two of the goals were photocopies of each other. The centre-backs were not well positioned.’

Bellingham still top of the charts
Real Madrid might not have returned to the summit on Sunday after losing to Atletico but Jude Bellingham’s numbers are still hard to beat. 

No player in La Liga has been fouled more. The England midfielder has been brought down 21 times, more than any other player. 

He is also still top scorer with five although he is now joined by Morata and Lewandowski.

Madrid abuse their super power
The trouble with Real Madrid being so good at comebacks is that occasionally it seems to condition the way they start games. They feel they can go behind and it will not be a problem. 

On Sunday they conceded the opening goal of the game in the first 10 minutes of a match for the fourth time this season … and this time there was no comeback.

Mbappe’s long shadow
His non-signing for Real Madrid conditioned everything in the summer as they seemed to decide that if they could not have the French striker they did not want anyone. 

As a result they have been left short in attack. With Vinicius injured they are left with Rodrygo and Joselu but the former has not scored since the opening day of the season and the latter was not trusted to start the game by Ancelotti. 

At the moment it seems when Bellingham doesn’t score, neither do Madrid. It’s a problem.

Barça’s Portugeezers have put them top
Joao Felix has three goals and two assists in four games and Joao Cancelo has two goals and one assist. 

Barcelona’s season looked grim on the penultimate day of the transfer window. When the two Portuguese internationals singed on deadline day everything changed.

‘I was playing very badly’ he admitted after Barcelona’s epic 3-2 win. ‘But you have to stay focused.’ His brilliance created the comeback but he was right about his performance before his goal and assist. 

You can see Barça have a top player on their hands. You can also see why Pep Guardiola got frustrated with him at Manchester City leaving him out for three games at the start of this year leading to him responding badly to being dropped and the City coach instructing Txiki Begiristain to move him on.

Girona heading into Europe
There’s a long way to go, okay point taken. But Girona had five players in Marca’s team of the weekend and this is not normal. Neither is it normal for them to be second in the table. 

They beat Mallorca 5-3 at the weekend and the start they have made to the season suggests they are in the mix for a European place for the long haul.

The table still lies
After six games played Rafa Benitez’ Celta Vigo are in the bottom three but no way have they been one of the worst three teams in the league. They have played well against Barcelona and Real Madrid but taken nothing from the games. 

Their fixtures will get easier and the wins will come. They have put their faith in Benitez and there’s no reason to believe he won’t deliver.

The next big thing from Brazil
Girona’s early season form has been built on many things but winger Savinho is certain a key component. He has two goals and three assists and has been one of the outstanding players of the season so far.
